The July Crisis · 1914

How a murder became a world war

In 1914 the great powers of Europe were locked into two armed alliance blocs. A crisis between any two members risked dragging in all the rest — so a local quarrel carried the seed of a general war.

The spark came on 28 June 1914, when a Serbian nationalist assassinated the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne at Sarajevo. Vienna resolved to punish Serbia — and Germany handed it a blank cheque, after which Vienna sent Belgrade a deliberately harsh ultimatum.

What turned a Balkan dispute into catastrophe was mobilization — and the rigid railway timetables that governed it. German strategy, the Schlieffen Plan, required striking France first through neutral Belgium, so a Russian mobilization forced a German attack in the west.

Each power acts from its own fears — the security dilemma in motion. Blue dotted terms open a definition. Step through the five stages below to watch the cascade build.

Model setup · the rules

Each power's fixed alignment and role sits on its card below. These are the rules that turn choices into war — they never change between stages.

Austria-Hungary and Serbia are in crisis from the assassination onward; Austria declares war only when Berlin backs it with a blank cheque and Serbia defies the ultimatum.
Russia mobilizes to shield Serbia; German war plans treat mobilization itself as the first act of war.
If Germany mobilizes west, the Schlieffen Plan sends its army through neutral Belgium against France — and cannot be recalled once begun.
Britain enters if, and only if, Belgian neutrality is violated and its guarantee stands.
Italy, though a Triple Alliance member, stayed neutral in 1914 and is omitted here.

The road to war

Each power sits roughly where it lay on the map, joined by faint alliance ties. Node colour shows how far each has individually climbed the escalation ladder — from green (at peace) to red (at war).

By 1914 Europe's great powers had bound themselves into two blocs by treaty. The logic was defensive: an attack on one ally would be met by all. But the same web meant a quarrel between any two members could pull in the rest. When Austria-Hungary moved against tiny Serbia, Russia was committed to Serbia, Germany to Austria, France to Russia — so a Balkan dispute mechanically enlarged into a war of the great powers before a shot had been fired in the west. color: #7DD3FC #end #end #component:container height: auto background: transparent spaceBottom: 10 #component:para text: The amplifier — mobilization and the security dilemma. Mobilization in 1914 ran on rigid railway timetables, and every general staff believed the side that mobilized first would win. So when Russia mobilized to protect Serbia, Germany could not simply wait: its Schlieffen Plan required striking France through Belgium before Russia was ready. Each power's defensive preparation looked like aggression to its neighbour, forcing a matching step. Once the trains began to roll, no statesman could stop them without leaving his country exposed — diplomacy lost to the timetable. color: #FB923C #end #end #component:container height: auto background: transparent #component:para text: Leg two — how the cascade might have broken. Every stage had an off-ramp. Germany could have restrained Vienna instead of signing a blank cheque; Austria could have accepted Serbia's largely conciliatory reply; Russia could have mobilized only against Austria, or not at all; a firmer British signal might have deterred the march through Belgium. Historians still argue over who bore most blame. But the structural lesson is starker: when rigid war plans and automatic alliances remove the brakes, a single spark can drive the whole system to catastrophe. color: #FCD34D #end #end #end #end
